This year's Christmas market in beautiful Basel is sure to be bigger and better than ever before, stretching over two city squares; Barfusserplatz in the heart of the Old Town and Munsterplatz next to the famous Basel cathedral .
Around 100 tall, illuminated pine trees line the longest Christmas street in Europe - with traditional specialist shops like Johann Wanner Christmas House . The wood huts sell everything from hats, fossils, tree ornaments, linen, pewter, glass glitter balls, wooden figures, folk art, pottery, mirror prisms, spices, wooden toys, children's clothes to scented woods.
During the pre-Christmas period, numerous churches and concert venues present an excellent choice of festive music and shows. Basel is host to numerous top-class shops with many international brands and specialist stores. Each year hundreds of local businesses are encouraged to decorate their windows in a festive manner.
On the boarder of Switzerland, Germany and France, Basel is a river city on the Rhine. There is fine modern architecture and over 40 fashionable and prestigious galleries and museums. The city's Cathedral is a dominant sight with its twin towers, red sandstone walls and patchwork of roof tiles. Basel's Old Town, dating back to the 15th century, has well preserved, romantic lanes.
