Staged in the heart of the city, the "Winter Scents, Amiens Christmas Market" (les parfums d'hiver, le marché de noël d'Amiens) is one of the biggest and best Christmas markets in northern France. The fresh alpine setting is abundant with invigorating produce, from eels to exquisite crystal. Be sure to try some famous Amiens macaroons - a trendy threat for UKfoodies this year. The recipe dates back to the 16th century and includes Valencia almonds and honey.
There is also an open air ice rink, merry-go-rounds, singers and shows. Most mesmerising is "Cathedral in Colour" (la cathédrale en couleurs) - a free light show from 1st December to 1st January; never is the striking Gothic cathedral more ethereal.
Once you have visited the stalls, why not make time to fully discover this city of culture. With a number of World Heritage sites, such as the Cathedral, as well as associations with the writer Jules Verne this city has a lot to offer. And with over 700 shops, the pre-Christmas shopper will be spoilt for choice.
